The History of COMO Shambhala Estate

In the forested hills above Ubud, where the sacred Ayung River carves through ancient jungle, COMO Shambhala Estate has become one of the world's most respected residential wellness retreats. Its story begins not with construction, but with recognition—of a place where healing has occurred for centuries.

Sacred Ground and Modern Vision

Long before the Estate opened its doors in December 2005, this 22-acre sanctuary held profound significance in Balinese culture. A natural spring known as The Source flows through the property, used for generations in local purification rituals. The grounds align with four key Balinese temples, part of the island's intricate spiritual geography. Even Ubud's name—derived from "Ubad," meaning medicine in Balinese—speaks to the abundance of healing plants that have grown in these forests since time immemorial.

Christina Ong's COMO Group recognized this potential when they acquired and transformed the former Begawan Giri Estate. Their vision was ambitious: to create a flagship wellness property that would honor both ancient healing traditions and contemporary medical understanding, wrapped in the understated luxury for which COMO had become known. This would be more than a spa retreat—it would pioneer the concept of the residential health retreat, where guests could immerse themselves completely in transformative wellness programs.

Architecture in Service of Transformation

The Estate's design philosophy reflects a fundamental belief: that true healing requires releasing distraction. Architect Cheong Yew Kuan and interior designer Koichiro Ikebuchi created spaces using local stone, teak, and traditional alang-alang roofing that seem to emerge organically from the jungle itself. The architecture doesn't demand attention; instead, it frames the natural world and creates containers for inner work. This restraint allows guests to focus not on their surroundings' opulence, but on their own transformation.

The original property featured thatched residences with traditionally furnished rooms and suites, each with verandas opening onto the forest canopy. Villas with private outdoor pools offered deeper seclusion for those seeking extended healing work. Every detail—from four-poster beds to the integration of natural materials—was chosen to support rest and renewal.

A Tapestry of Healing Traditions

From its opening, COMO Shambhala Estate distinguished itself through its integrative approach to wellness. Rather than favoring a single modality, the Estate wove together multiple healing traditions: Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine alongside Balinese healing practices; Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga complemented by Pilates; hydrotherapy and modern diagnostics informing ancient wisdom.

This wasn't eclecticism for its own sake, but a recognition that different bodies and spirits respond to different approaches. The Estate's wellness programs were designed to be rigorous and transformative—guided journeys rather than casual spa experiences. Expert practitioners in each tradition worked alongside modern health professionals, creating personalized programs that addressed guests' unique needs.

Evolution and Expansion

As COMO Shambhala Estate matured, it expanded both its facilities and its programming. Multiple lounges and heated pools created varied spaces for movement and reflection. Jungle gyms allowed guests to exercise surrounded by nature. The Ayurvedic spa grew to feature nine treatment rooms, each designed for specific therapeutic work. A dedicated fitness room complemented outdoor yoga pavilions and guided jungle hikes that connected guests with the healing landscape itself.

Two restaurants developed menus rooted in COMO Shambhala's nutrition philosophy—food as medicine, prepared with Indonesian ingredients and international techniques. Twenty-four-hour room service meant that even those in deep retreat work could maintain their dietary protocols.

Today's Estate

Today, COMO Shambhala Estate stands as the flagship of Christina Ong's global COMO Shambhala wellness brand, having established the template that would inform the group's approach to healing hospitality worldwide. It remains distinctive for its commitment to genuine transformation rather than mere relaxation—a place where guests come not just to rest, but to fundamentally shift their relationship with health and wellbeing.

The Estate continues to honor its location's spiritual significance while offering access to world-class wellness expertise. That natural spring still flows through the property. The jungle still provides its healing plants. And guests still arrive seeking what people have sought here for centuries: purification, renewal, and reconnection with vitality.

In an era of wellness tourism, COMO Shambhala Estate endures as something rarer—a true sanctuary where ancient wisdom and modern understanding converge in service of lasting healing.
