Grounding Earthing

The practice of direct physical contact with the Earth's surface—through barefoot walking or conductive devices—to facilitate electron transfer from the ground into the body.

What is Grounding Earthing?

Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of reconnecting with the Earth’s electrical energy through direct contact with the surface. This includes walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems, some of them patented, that transfer the energy from the ground into the body. The Earth carries a negative electrical charge, and when you make direct contact with the ground, free electrons transfer into your body, helping to neutralize free radicals and reduce inflammation. The practice encompasses both outdoor methods—walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil; swimming in natural water bodies—and indoor techniques using grounding mats, sheets, or patches connected to properly grounded electrical outlets.

Origins & Lineage

While it may seem like a modern wellness trend, the concept traces back thousands of years. Ancient cultures like the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and practitioners of Chinese medicine valued grounding for its healing and spiritual benefits. Many Native American tribes held the Earth as sacred, with ceremonies that often included walking barefoot on sacred grounds during seasonal rituals—spring renewal dances, harvest thanksgiving ceremonies, and healing gatherings—fostering a spiritual bond with Mother Earth, believed to restore balance and vitality. Physicians like Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā) synthesized Greek and Eastern teachings, noting in the Canon of Medicine that clay poultices and grounding wraps reduce inflammation and fever.

The modern scientific investigation of grounding began in the 1990s. The modern pursuit of scientific evidence that grounding impacts human physiology and health began with Drs. Karol and Pawel Sokal in Poland and Clint Ober in the United States in the 1990s. Clint Ober first learned about grounding when installing Cable TV systems in Billings, Montana in the early 1960s, later forming Telecrafter Corporation and building it into the largest provider of cable installation services in the United States, specializing in proper grounding of cable installations for safety and TV signal stability. While sitting on a park bench in Sedona, Ober noticed tourists wearing shoes with thick rubber or plastic soles that insulated people from the Earth’s electrical surface charge, making him wonder whether wearing shoes and disconnecting from the ground could affect health. After a successful anecdotal study of 60 subjects was published in 2000, a pilot study measured cortisol levels, tracking participants’ circadian rhythms before and after sleeping grounded over several weeks; the results, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2004, revealed a significant impact on the participants. Earthing as a health concept was popularized in the early 2000s by researchers like James Oschman and Clint Ober.

How It’s Practiced

Grounding can be practiced through multiple methods, divided into outdoor and indoor approaches. Outdoor grounding can be as simple as walking barefoot on grass or using grounding mats and other devices designed to replicate the Earth’s natural charge indoors. Common grounding techniques include walking barefoot on natural surfaces, using grounding mats, and submersing in natural water bodies, which facilitate the transfer of electrons from the Earth to the body. Practitioners may sit in a chair and let bare feet touch the ground, swim or relax in a natural body of water, or get their hands dirty by touching or playing with the soil. Lying on a beach, outdoor gardening, and certain forms of forest bathing—when practiced barefoot—also constitute grounding practices.

For those unable to spend significant time outdoors, Clint Ober developed the first indoor grounding products, including grounding mats, sheets, and patches. Indoor grounding equipment may be used when going outside to ground yourself isn’t an option; grounding products include socks, patches, and blankets. These devices typically connect to the ground port of electrical outlets or to grounding rods placed in the earth, creating a conductive path for electron transfer.

Grounding Earthing Today

Grounding has evolved from a niche practice into a global wellness movement. Today, more than one million people worldwide use grounding products inspired by Clint Ober’s discovery. Contemporary seekers encounter grounding through multiple channels: wellness retreats offering barefoot nature walks, biohacking communities promoting grounding mats for sleep optimization, functional medicine practitioners recommending grounding as part of anti-inflammatory protocols, and outdoor education programs emphasizing barefoot connection to nature.

Some 20 studies to date have reported intriguing evidence of wide and significant physiological improvements when the body is grounded vs. non-grounded, and the research, along with numerous anecdotal reports, demonstrates that Earthing clearly deserves inclusion in the clinical practice of preventive, alternative, and lifestyle medicine. Emerging scientific research supports the concept that the Earth’s electrons induce multiple physiological changes of clinical significance, including reduced pain, better sleep, a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic tone in the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and a blood-thinning effect. The practice is marketed through specialized product companies, featured in documentary films, and discussed in podcasts and wellness media.

Common Misconceptions

Grounding earthing is often confused with psychological grounding techniques used in trauma therapy and anxiety management. The term ‘grounding’ has been used in recent years more as a mental health strategy to calm anxiety, stress and pain; this practice is different from a more traditional use of the term, otherwise known as ‘earthing’ that relates to the electromagnetic exchange between the Earth and other objects, including humans. While both practices aim to restore balance, they operate through different mechanisms—one psychological, one bioelectrical.

Another misconception is that grounding constitutes a complete medical treatment. Earthing should not be considered a substitute for medical care; while it may provide certain health benefits, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider if you have any health concerns or conditions. There’s not much research on the benefits of grounding, though smaller studies have reported some potential benefits for inflammation, pain, mood, and more. The evidence base remains limited compared to established medical interventions.

Finally, not all grounding products are equivalent in quality or safety. The market includes numerous manufacturers with varying standards, and walking barefoot outdoors can expose you to hazards such as sharp objects and infections; when swimming in natural bodies of water, it’s essential to be aware of water quality and potential safety risks, such as currents.

How to Begin

The simplest entry point requires no equipment or expense. All you have to do to start grounding is remove your shoes and stand barefoot on the earth. Researchers suggest spending time walking barefoot or sleeping on the ground for at least 20 minutes daily. Begin with short sessions—10 to 20 minutes of barefoot contact with grass, sand, or soil—and gradually increase duration based on comfort and results.
